  • Subdivision Not Being Applied

    Hi

I can't seem to get my mesh to render with subdivisions. I've got a mesh imported as an OBJ - put it within a subdivision node, added a Vray geometry tag and enabled subdivisions, but it still renders without any subdividing. - Please could someone point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks!

Have you tried to delete the normal tag on the object?

Unfortunately that did not work - please see attached Cloud render....

      My workflow is:

+ model in Modo (for speed, as I've been using for a number of years)
+ export OBJ into C4D and use merge project to combine all my OBJ's
      + render using VRay

Not sure why I can't seem to subdivide though....

If you can share a small part of the object I'll check it out

I can't seem to find any info on how to optimise the mesh in C4D - could you point me in the right direction please?

When I apply to subdivision node, it does look correct in the C4D viewport (you can see the subdivision).

VFB is too low res, so I can tell what's happening until I do a final Vray render in the Chaos Cloud.

          Any help greatly appreciated!
          Thanks

I think I've figured it out - I tried using a standard material and that renders fine in CC and on VFB. SO I tried the VRay material, which Im using a normal map in the bump slot and reduced the amount and this renders perfectly.

Is this the correct way to apply a normal map?

If so, I see the the standard C4D material has a normal slot which seems much more intuitive - can I assign 2 materials to a piece of geo - a Vray material for everything apart from normal and displacements, and a standard C4D material to handle these?

              Thank you

The normal map needs to be set to linear color profile usually.
I'm not sure if I understand correctly what you need, you can create one or more material, then you can use a geometry tag for displacement and use the Vray bump shader to add as many normal/bmp map you want on top of the original material.
I've tried your file and here it works perfectly using both the geometry tag in subdivision mode and the C4D subdivision surface (C4D R26, Vray6, MacOS):

Maybe the problem is with your shader setup, the scene scale or other things. You may want to send the entire scene to developers so that they can investigate where the problem is, my guess is that is a user error but you never know.

Many thanks! Im getting up to speed with it all - thanks for the heads up on the colour profile - I had to not set that, which makes a big difference.

Please could I just check on the correct way to set up a displacement map in C4D for use with VRay:

                  1) use VRay geo tag and load in displacement map under Texture
                  2) set image profile to linear
                  3) set type to '2D displacement'

Is the screenshot I attached correct?

Thank you for all your help with this!

Im confused on how to apply the normal map - say I have an VRay AI material, do I ALSO add a Vray bump material and add them both to the mesh?

I'll check out the VRay help..

I'm working through the tutorial for Vray and C4D from 3D Render and Beyond - It is FANTASTIC!!! It's answered all of my questions, in a very easy to follow way. It's taught me so much about VRay and how to get the best out of it - thank you 3D Redner and Beyond!
