  • Motion Blur Causes VRay 6.10 crashes C4D 2023.2.1

    Hi

All was going well with a production render, but then I added a VRAy Object Properties tag to override the number of mo blur samples to 8 on the wheels of a racing car.

    There are two major issues:

    1) Now when I try to render the scene, VRay cashes - please see attached.

    2) In C4D, I can scrub through my scene, and the wheels on the car rotate about their axles, but when I was able to do a production render (just before the crash) with Object Properties overriding the mo blur samples on the wheels only to 8, the render showed the wheels as a blurry mess.

I have a the crash report and can upload the scene if required.

    Any help gratefully appreciated!
    Thank you

Hi again pali_rao, the fix for the crash is now available in the latest nightly builds here. Sorry for the caused inconvenience.

      Hello pali_rao

Please, upload the crash report, the .dmp file and the scene so we can investigate further. You can do it in the Forum or you can submit a Request to our System if it's more convenient for you.
Make sure to include all the textures, HDRIs and assets that the scene needs.
How to reach the .dmp file you can see here: https://docs.chaos.com/display/VC4D/...isnotAvailable

Does it crash every single time?
Does the crash reproduces with other scenes or just this one?
If you reset the Motion Blur Samples to the default value does the crash disappear?

Hi pali_rao, since from the screenshot it seems you are using the same geometry for all the wheels, this might be caused by a regression we introduced with the speedup improvements with 6.1. Until we resolve the issue, there are several things you can try to workaround this:
        1. Ensure that all the wheels with the same geometry have equal number of motion blur samples. In your case this means to check if all the wheels in your scene have 8 motion blur samples.
        2. If you don't need anything particular from Update 1, you can downgrade to the latest 6.0 version, which should not have the problem.
        3. As last option - you can disable the geometry optimizations, but this is not trivial on MacOS and should be used only if the other options are not viable.

Also, as viktor_angelov mentioned, uploading the crash report and possibly the scene would be helpful to resolve the issue.

        Sorry for the inconvenience.

          Thanks for the quick response.

          deyan.hadzhiev -

          1) I added an Object Properties tag to all wheels and gave them all 8 mo blur samples, but this caused the crash. I've uploaded the scene to you via the link, but in that, just used the override tag on the first car, which still causes a crash.
          2) Ill try this thanks! I've attached the result from a CCloud render (only with 2 mo blur samples) - the wheels are not rendered correctly.

I'll go back to VRay 6 and let you know what happens - thanks!

Upon the scene investigation - I saw that the tires having the motion blur samples override are actually instances of other polygon objects. To workaround the crash you need to set the same number of samples on the original polygon objects as well. Also I have fixed the crash internally, but it may take several days to be tested and the fix to be made available in the stable builds.

About the ghosting problem - it seems to me that the wheels in question have their pivot center slightly offset from their local coordinate system Z axis (around which they are rotating), so fixing this (and probably increasing the motion blur samples a bit more, like 16) should resolve this issue.

Hi deyan.hadzhiev - thanks for investigating and getting back to me so soon.

Apologies, I didn't clearly explain in my previous post - in the scene file I sent to you, I only applied to override to one set of wheels, but the in the original crash, I had set the override to ALL wheels, actual polygons and instances, but it still crashed. Great that you have fixed this though.

If you scrub through the scene using and RIG null object from frame 30 to 50, you can see that each wheel rotates about it's own axis. When I render on 40, there is too much wobble, but only one the render.

The front two wheels on each car have a slight camber, but the back ones don't. I'll investigate further...

Thanks for your help with this.
