  • Triplanar and normal map broken

    Hi All!

I've discovered a really strange issue with the normal maps and triplanar mapping on objects with multiple uvw islands
    I use c4d 2023.2.2, V-Ray 6 for Cinema 4D, update 2.1 (v6.20.01 from Feb 6 2024)

I recently noticed that using a normal map with triplanar node in the vray node materials bump map slots, the triplanar node takes the uvw maps into account. If you have a uv unwrapped model that has multiple uvw islands the triplanar node breakes.
It doesn't matter if you try to use a uvw channel node in the bitmap an set it to a non existing uvw map or change all the settings. If the object is uvw unraped the triplnar node simli breakes and produces artifact.

This makes the triplanar node unusable for normal maps. As far as we can tell this doesn't happen if u use bump maps with the triplanar node.

Am i doing something seriously wrong here, or what's going on with normal maps?

I've attached a test scene and a screenshot o the issues.

As we discussed in the ticket, I am sharing the workflow here as well for everyone to see.

Make sure to have the Normal Map node before the Triplanar node.
The V-Ray Material Bump Type needs to be set to Explicit Normal.
The Normal Map Node to Normal Map in Tangent Space. The Strength could be controlled from there.

I am sending you a video recording of the new set-up: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...1_09-43-27.mp4

In the video you can see:
      1. The correct order of the Nodes
      2. The Bump Type in the V-Ray Material
      3. The Map Type in the Normal Map
      4. The different renders with 1 and 100 values in the Multiplier
