If I solo an object in C4D it won't solo in the VFB - unlike Redshift. In 3DSMax if I isolate an object it's isolated in the VFB. Is this functionality not available with Vray and C4D?

You can go to the Render Settings > V-Ray > Image Sampler > Render Mask Mode and select Active Selection. This will give you the results you are looking for. Please, refer to the video below.
