Hello everyone,
I'm happy to announce that we've managed to simplify the deployment process of V-Ray in Houdini by introducing a single installer package for both GUI and ZIP deployments.
At the moment, the unified installer is available in the V-Ray for Houdini Nightlies Section, and we plan to make it available to everyone with the next official release.
The changes were made to ensure that we can best support the rapid pace of development of Houdini by SideFX by prodiving continued support for all existing production builds in a single package. You will find a single, unified installer for every major Houdini release supported by V-Ray at the time of writing this forum post - Houdini 19.0, Houdini 19.5 and Houdini 20.0.
The installer will currently look for the latest supported Houdini version (e.g. 20.0.506), and deploy V-Ray through the package system by adding a "vray_for_houdini.json" file under (e.g.) "C:\Program Files\Side Effects Software\Houdini 20.0.506\packages\vray_for_houdini.json".
V-Ray itself will be installed under (e.g.) "C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\V-Ray\Houdini_20.0"
If using a custom solution for deploying ZIP builds, you will need to do a couple of changes:
- update the PYTHONPATH variable to point to the correct dso version for the Houdini production build number, e.g. "/vfh_home/dso_py{VERSION}/{HDK_VER}/python"
- update the VFH_DSO_PATH variable to point to the correct dso version for the houdini production build number
At the moment, the GUI Installer will attempt to deploy V-Ray for the latest supported Houdini production build, even if the Houdini build is not installed on your workstation. We are working to address this - in the meantime, please use the "Advanced" option during the GUI installation to select the proper package folder path for your Houdini production build.
Best regards!
