  • [HOU-1481] Q: How to reduce Bucket Render Time?

With Progressive rendering there is an option for render time limit. How can i limit bucket render time? I tried reducing max div to 2, increasing noise threshold to 0.1, turning off DMC Sampler, Reducing Post Effect to 1, and nothing made any difference in time or quality.

The reason I am trying to reduce the time is that i am rendering an animation and i want to use cryptomatte, which only works with Bucket. I have been using Progressive up to now, limiting the render time per frame with very good results. When I try Bucket, the render times get drastically longer with marginal quality improvement. With Bucket, I want to trade the marginal quality improvement for speed.

If you can recommend any good tutorials that can help that would be great too.

    Thank you

Well that sounds weird. Do you have several ROPs? Are you sure the right one is rendered? Reducing max subdivs to 2 should be enough. If the main purpose of the render is only generating crypto element, than you could turn off, gi, lights, shadows, maps, reflections, sss, glossy, reduce max depth of refractions/reflections. But really can't tell what is the problem without a scene.

its the same scene that i shared in the Cryptomatte post, here is the link to the scene: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zdt9d4ms9...okQmK0_Aa?dl=0

      Only one ROP.

Just to verify, I rendered again, with Max subdiv at 2, render time 3:32.
with Max subdiv at 24, render time 3:35

Sorry for the late reply, it looks like when the engine is CUDA / RTX sampler settings are ignored and some defaults are used. I've added this into our bug tracking system as HOU-1481. I will write here once this is fixed. Thanks for the feedback.

Not default exactly, but what ever your progressive settings are that is going to be used for bucket. And your bucket settings are ignored. I was complain about this before, for both Houdini and 3D Max implementation. Hopefully this can get finally fixed.
