Rest and UV channel are almost completely orthogonal...
When you enable reference mesh rest - reference mesh is added to the geometry to use for triplanar projection.
When you are setting "rest" in UVW generator you are forcing geometry attribute "rest" to be exported as geometry map channel to be possible to be sampled by the generator (same for texuser*).
