  • Light Linking (Volumes)

Does the link linker work with Vray? I'm working with Volumes and I'm trying to light link a rectangular light to a specific volume (vdb) but isn't working? There is a different way to light link in Vray for H? I tried to look on the docs but I couldn't find anything. Thanks

In short - light links with volumes don't work at the moment - they used to in the past, then changes had to be made by the Core team which broke light linking for us, and recently many things were fixed so we are in the process of getting those fixes to Houdini.
I'll ping you when we're back to normal with this, hopefully next week.

    Thank you!

I see, we really need this. Thank you.

Also, not sure if this is related or not I just checked my render and I have light behind the volumes at a very low intensity is invisible and I'm getting this hard edge with the light, this shouldn't happen. You can see in the examples below plus where the light is.

Do these fixes include fixes to the NUMA issues?

hsz , any chance you could share that file ? I spent about an hour trying to reproduce this to no avail.

ronald_a I'm afraid that no, we haven't yet managed to fix the slow-down problem.

Is this fixable at all? It seems that this problem exists for a pretty long time now (for about half a year). I'm wondering how anybody is rendering volumes (on the cpu) with this issue. Are people only using non-NUMA machines?

If there was nothing we could do, I would've told you right away instead of dragging you into this discussion for months now. It seems to be something convoluted which only a couple of developers can take care of - we thought we had a fix around December when I messaged you but as you know, it turned out there's more to the problem. I'm keeping tabs on the ticket- it's high up in the list of issues to prioritize.

Gosho.Genchev I can't replicate now. I tried a few times, but no luck.

I hope to see the light linking working hopefully this week?

                    Hey, hsz ,

light linking should be working correctly with volumes starting with today's nightly builds.

                    Hope that helps!

                        Hey Gosho.Genchev ,

re-reading my previouse post I feel like my wording could have been interpreted as a harsh critisism on development speed which was not my intention at all.
Sorry about that. I will keep poking you about this issue from time to time though.
