  • Volume Displacement

I've trying to get some displacement in a volume without any luck. I couldn't find much info about vray for Houdini to do this kind of effect so I found at 3DMax video and they have these settings which I'm guessing is the same as the displ2 in Houdini. But even If I plug a noise there I do not get anything when rendering? Am I missing something here? thanks.

    Hey hsz ,

we don't support it for the time being. There's a way to get this working with the caveat that the textures you assign will be static. Would you mind me asking what the goal is so I can check if there's anything we can do in the short term ?

    Thank you!

hsz you could displace the volume by turning into a distance field. displacing that, and converting back to a fog VDB and saving files for V-Ray to render.

Yeah - I know Hristo, thanks though! - It would be nice to have the option at render time though. Can you post your workaround for the still Gosho.Genchev - Also, Are you planning to add this into Vray for H? What is the hang that this isn't being supported out of curiosity?

We need a way to sample volume channels through a texture that can be hooked up to the volume grid shader - that's all there is to it really.

Yes, in my opinion it's important we figure something out. The Phoenix FD team recently added the option to use advected UVs for rendering with a texture so that's all the more reason to support volume channel sampling.

The displacement controls are currently hidden - you just need to un-hide the Displacement folder from the Edit Parameter Interface (make sure "Show Invisible Parameters" is enabled).

Hi Gosho, can this now be available so isn't hidden? Or there is still some stuff to figure out? Thanks!
