  • SSS refraction glossiness

So I have my SSS material exactly how I want it, the only thing being I want to blur the refraction glossiness so in this example the pea refraction is blurred a little.

I have tried layering materials but everything I do changes the overall look.

    Any help appreciated.

I found this on the forum. (see image).

It talks of activating SSS in the vray material so you can use refractive glossiness.

Any clues anyone? Can't see the option.

Are you using Random Walk SSS?
You should have the volume scatter shader as base in a blend material, then using a Vray material as coat with 100% blend amount.. and black diffuse
Now you control reflection glossiness and refraction glossiness of your coat material

The fast SSS2 material is pretty bad, and the built-in SSS in Vray's material is worse.. I don't use these
Random Walk SSS is way to go

Random walk SSS is the volume scatter node?

I set this up and it works a treat so thanks !!!
Unfortunately it is very hard to replicate the SSS shader I had originally

Great info though and if I had set it up like that from the beginning I would be onto a winner...

Yeah Volume scatter node uses Random Walk SSS(with multiple bounces, I use around 50), it is quite easy to control and I use it for pretty much all my SSS including skin
The workflow is annoying as you have to use it in a blend material, but the results are great!

They will rework the SSS in Vray's material, hopefully soon in Vray 5
So the workflow would be easier..

AIstandard shader is great honestly(hoping Vray would follow this model), one material that does everything perfectly including SSS.. And with only 2 sliders to control SSS overall
Right now, it takes some 7 sliders to control Translucency in Vray's material...etc and overall the the results are not great(because it uses a single bounce) I haven't touched that in years.. scatter volume shader is way to go for now

            Great info.

50 bounces seems like a lot. I will have to experiment.

I set it up as per your instructions and it seems pretty solid.

            Thanks again Muhammed!
