  • Houdini GPU more noise with default settings then 3ds Max

    hi all, quick questions.
vray gpu in houdini with default setting is a lot noisier then in 3ds max. is this correct behavior or am I missing something?

Can you send me your test scenes, both hip and max will be great.

      sure, here they are..

I did not included the HDRI, that one is 130mb, any one you have will do I suppose.

        1. Does your max V-Ray Core matches the one used in Houdini?
        2. What are 3ds max "max subdivs"? So they don't match Houdini default settings? Is that the issue?
        3. If settings are the same - is the result the same?
        4. What are early termination settings?

I'm using vray next 4.3 on both, the settings are both absolute default, but in Houdini is a lot more noisy.

I can increase the max subdivs in houdini to clear the noise, not a problem, just curious to know why the default are not matching in terms of the amount of noise in the final image.

"are both absolute default" but are they the same? I'm not sure we ever planned to match 3dsmax settings in any way...

I did check them all and they look the same to me. the one thing I'm not sure are the min and max subdivs in max, those options are not available or visible when using GPU.
I guess that is the difference, the max subdivs are set at 100 in the default CPU progressive, but the are still 1 and 24 with bucket rendering

So, I guess that's the answer and nothing to fix here... May be it was not the best decision in the beginning, but changing this now will break all existing scenes... We may rework this for V-Ray 5.x.

ah sure, I was not asking for any fixes.

thank you very much actually, all I wanted was to understand why is different, and now I know.

I guess I got used to max having such perfect default settings, Houdini is great but it needs more looking after..
