  • Decreasing Points Rendering Time

I'm rendering a point heavy scene which is taking 30+ minutes a frame. I am rendering 4K frames though. Are there any suggestions for speeding up point renders? I was going to upload the Houdini file but was given a notice that I can't upload files with a .hiplc extension so I've attached jpgs of the node setup, vray material. I'm using AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X 16-core processor, 34 GB RAM (keep meaning to add more!) However, because I'm using the point material I can't use the GPU renderer which is what I use for most of my renders. Any suggestions?

    Hey gregfed ,

you could zip the .hip file in an archive and upload it here.

Regarding the speed up - are you rendering the particles as spheres or disks ? The Geometry node -> Render -> Geometry -> Render Points As option is supported so you may give that a shot to see if your render times will improve.

    Hope that helps!

Rendering as spheres. I'll try circles to see, but I do actually want them to look like spheres. This isn't important from a distance but points fly right in front of the camera at times and are much larger. I am rendering 4k, 32-bit (this will be composited with other imagery and the entire project is 4K,32-bit) and there are a lot of points so it could just be a reasonable rendering time. I dropped the settings in the rendering tab, bucket. If there's any other advice, great, but if not, then it takes the time to render that it takes! I appreciate you prompt reply!!! I've said this in emails to your company, your customer support is wonderful!

35.51 as circles and 35:42 as spheres -- so I'll stick with spheres for this particular case
