  • Rendering objects as seen through glass... Without the glass

    Hi all,

So I have a project where I'm rendering internals of a hearing aid style product. The internals change from render to render, but the 'shell' remains the same.

As you're aware, when the objects are behind the glass material, they are slightly altered by the refraction of the light (warped/magnified)

So... Is it possible to render out the objects, as though they were seen through the glass, with the glass hidden at render time?

It'd be ideal to render the shell once and then batch render the different configurations.

    Cheers!

Maybe use a multi matte (enable All Channels in the refraction section of a vRayMtl so it affects the multi matte)

Render out the matte and use it as a render mask texture to cause it to only render that area for the other versions. Comp together.

Note that there may be GI bleed and other areas that would change from version to version. Handle accordingly.

If the other versions are simple texture map changes you could make those texture maps image sequences with one version per frame and render an animation to get the frames you need.

Excellent! I've not tried it yet but it sounds like it should work...

Unfortunately all the geo changes inside otherwise using an image sequence would be a great shout. I've never thought to do this though for colour changes etc. Thanks for the tip!
