  • VolumeGridShader: Missing options

    Hi

While transitioning from Maya to Houdini we have noticed, that some of the options/features of the VolumeGrid in Maya seems to be missing in VRay5 for Houdini.

Some of the missing options are:
    - Constant Color
    - Simple smoke opacity
    - Based on dropdown for Color and Opacity
    - Channel mappings?

Are there any plans on adding these?

    Bump.

We are really missing a lot of options in the VolumeGrid setup in VRay for Houdini.

      Hey jbvfx ,

We tried to simplify the UI as much as possible, taking other artists' feedback as a guide.

Here's how those options exposed in the Maya UI relate to V-Ray in Houdini:

Constant Color -> this is the same as removing one of the color swatches so the Smoke -> Color Ramp has a single color.
Simple smoke opacity -> this is the same as keeping the Smoke -> Opacity Ramp at it's default value and setting the Source Range parameter to reflect the Density field range.
Based on dropdown for Color and Opacity -> those options are in the Bindings tab, under Smoke -> Opacity Field and Color Field.
Channel mappings -> because of the above, those are not needed - you can simply specify the field you want to use under the Bindings tab.

Futhermore, please use the File SOP (in Packed Disk Primitive mode) to load VDBs - we've recently restricted the Volume Grid Cache SOP to be used for ".aur" files (Chaos Phoenix cache files) only.

      Hope that helps!

edit: I just realized we've missed this thread a couple of months ago and you've received no answer - please accept my apologies for that.
