  • (Fixed) [HOU-2694] Importing and modifying .vrscene (issues with materials, uvs)

I want to open an asset exported from 3ds and modify inside H. For example make some variations on materials or scattering things on surfaces.
Vrscene imports works fine and renders as expected as long as I don't unpack. If I unpack, materials seems to break in different ways and will not render the same at all. Sometimes materials renders black and sometimes it seems they miss UVs. (I have not yet researched all issues) Is there a way to unpack and modify vrscenes in H at this time that works or is this broken ?

It's generally best to render packed. If you need to unpack for editing, repack afterwards, just make sure all the relevant attributes are carried over.

Thing is, when I render scene as it first is imported (packed) it looks fine. But after I click "unpack to polygons" and I select the OUT node (repacked, without doing any editing at all) it doesn't look the same.

Edit: Ok I solved it. The 3DS asset had uvs in "uv1" vertex attribute instead of "uv". Fixed in a wrangle "@uv = @uv1;" I usually don't work with 3DS so I am not sure if uv1 is the default or if it has something to do with the export.

        Dear all, hello.

We are aware that now Unpack to polygons disrespects the UVs in a .vrscene files exported from 3dsMax.
As you have mentioned, the materials (or their UVs) should be replaced (edited) manually, which will be resolved in the next builds.

If you have other issues, keep in mind that VRayScene > Import > Import Materials > Options > Remap UV index is made for your convenience when working with exported from 3dsMax files.
I will spread the news when the improvement becomes available.

        Wishing you a happy week.

Unpacking vrscene is completely rewritten, UV mapping options added.
Hope it'll work better for you.

Reviving this thread. We still have many issues when unpacking vrscenes. Some times it just is some weirdness but other times, on quite many vrscenes, Houdini crashes. This is an issue because we have a need to load a scene/mesh and then extract a hull and oriented bounds to work with even if the actual rendering is done packed.

              > We still have many issues when unpacking vrscenes.

All we need are those vrscene files that are crashing for you. Since our test cases are passing without your files it's simply impossible to fix anything.
Just a note that we'll only fix what's crashing, no new/additional functionality is planned to be implemented.
If you need to share/edit comprehensive assets consider using Solaris/USD.

Thanks for the heads up. I will see if I am allowed to share some of the crashes scenes (asset licenses etc).
