  • VRAY object properties for volumetrics not working as expected

Hello, I would like to know what is the proper way to matte out different volumetrics for comping/rendering purposes instead of rendering all together.

Currently i have tried using vray object properties as per the houdini docs but it seems that it works only for geometry. Using a wrapper material override does not matte out the volume correctly as well.

What might be the proper workflow to matte out volumetrics?

    Cheers,
    Bryan

    Hello cg_dandelionstudios ,

Treating volumetrics as matte surfaces is currently not supported in V-Ray. The development team is in the process of overhauling volumetric rendering for the next version of V-Ray so expect that to come to V-Ray over in the mid-term future.

Currently, the recommended workflow is to use Cryptomatte to generate a mask.

    Best regards!

Gosho.Genchev Does this mean that they might overhail the volume shader as well?
Sometimes I need to try to match mantra looks in VRay and find it impossible. One thing I find a struggle in VRay is getting the volume to respond to intense lights inside of it predictably.

        Hey Dubbie99 ,

        Yes, exactly.

When you say "predictably" - would you mind elaborating further, or maybe sharing a couple of images that illustrate the problem?

        Best regards!
