  • Crashing renders on the farm

We are having a bunch of crashes when running on the farm.

90% of the cases it works after retrying the vrscene generation.

The output log do not tell us much unfortunately. Looks normal up until below. Is there some flag we can add to get even more output? Would it help to send over a vrscene? If so I can email one over.

    Code:
    [2019/08/19 16:32:53 killed - signal (SIGSEGV) rc=-11, ["//path/vraystd_adv_42001_linux_x64_clang-gcc-4.8/bin/vray.bin", "-display=0", "-noFrameNumbers=0", "-frames=1011", "-sceneFile=//path/1011.vrscene", "-imgFile=/path/project_sequence_010_main_user_v018_beautyCharA.#.exr"]]

Slightly off-topic but can we now switch to using the vray.bin from VRay for Houdini on the farm instead of VRay Standalone? I am a little scared of the version mismatch.

If we disable GI it stops crashing but gives us some weird semi transparent and colored boxes in the rendered frames.

Hello GoodbyeKansas , sorry for the late reply, what are your OS and Houdini version, are you using nightlly build of V-Ray or the official release from download section of our web site? Is this happen with every vrscene? Will be a lot easy to find the problem if you send a vrscene that crashes on your farm at georgy.chakarov@chaosgroup.com or support@chaosgroup.com.

        Centos 7.6
        Houdini 17.0.459

VRay Houdini Nightly build from 20 aug.
        VRay Next Standalone update 2.1

Tried rendering on the farm with the vray.bin from both Houdini and Standalone but both crash.

It is not happening with all vrscene files. Some work and some don't. Sometimes retrying the vrscene generation makes it work but not always. I'll email over one that do not crash and one that crashes.

GoodbyeKansas Hey we found the issue that is causing the crash and fix should be available in nightly builds soon. But it is also caused by incorrect export of hair by our exporter. Is it possible to share the hip file for this scene here or by email, or if not can you share how you setup hair in /obj/whiskers1 ?

I'll send the hip file over to you through email. Do we need to update vray standalone or just vray for houdini?

If you could write here or email me directly when the build is out that would be awesome.

Hello GoodbyeKansas ,this issue should be fixed now if you use VFH as standalone, I am not sure that the fix is available in V-Ray Standalone. Also is it possible to send the hip file where this vrscene is generated. You could send it to : georgy.chakarov@chaosgroup.com or support@chaosgroup.com

Yeah we are not having any crashes like this anymore. Overall became more stable when switching to using the shipped vray.bin from the houdini package.
