  • when dome is invisible it will not be visible in refraction

Correct me if im wrong but when the dome is invisible it should still be visible in refraction as it is in diffuse and reflection.

This is in core and not houdini specific.

Hi, invisible lights are not visible in refraction, and this is a V-Ray behavior, not a VFH specific. The workaround I can suggest is to use V-Ray MtlOverride with "base_mtl" material of the object, and same texture which is used by the domeLight connected to "environment_override", don't forget to turn "Use Environment Override Texture" toggle in override material parameters. Texture should use same mapping as domeLight in order to get "proper" refractions.

It depends on who you ask In many cases this is the desired behavior (f.e. if you render a building, the dome is seen through windows, but you want to replace it with a different background, then you definitely don't want to see the dome through the windows).

I would say that the expected behaviour is that it is visible because both specular and diffuse are and also that's the behaviour in most other renderers, but sometimes we want the behaviour of it not visible, and that i think should be a toggle or an override workflow. Nothing important for us though so no need to change the behaviour now that we have a workflow.

Thanks for the answers and the tips!

I think another workaround would be to set yo7ur glass material in refraction tab to affect both color and alpha? Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

You're probably thinking of the alpha of the rendered object while the topic is regarding the visibility of the dome light through refractions.
