  • Houdini 18.0.391 Scatter Freeze

    Hi,

i'm testing the Performance of Houdini and Vray with scattering Instances.

It works fine until the Rendering finishes or i want to stop the Rendering.
Sometimes it even don't start to render at all.
After the Houdini GUI Freezes and I have to quit via Task Manager.

    SOmebody else this Problems?

I use Houdini 18.0.391 and "vray_adv_43001_houdini18.0.391_7005119_6691" Nightly Build

I use GPU Rendering in the RTX Mode (Attachment)
I also use a VRscene From Maya to Instance.

I send an email with the Scene to the Support.

    Cheers
    Tobias

"Use Rayserver Instancer" doesn't work on GPU (as the tool-tip mentions).
My guess is instances do not fit in the GPU memory.

      Hi Andrei,

yeah, I saw that later and switched it off. I'll give a try with the NVBRIDGE. It didn't looked like full Memory to me. I also had a look into the Output Console and GPU-Z.

      Cheers

I tried it with the CPU, but has the same Effect. If you Stop the Rendering Houdini will Freeze for 5 Minutes.

I'll try to Install a older Version or Use another Nighly Build

But have you enabled rayserver for CPU?
vrscene instancing is a bit tricky still...

Attaching an image of 1M vrscene instances with CPU and rayserver option.

And here is your scene rendered on CPU with rayserver option (NOTE: rayserver option must be enabled on BOTH instance and instanced object nodes, I'll check if this could be optimized).
Unfortunately we don't have such an efficient instancing of vrscenes for GPU yet...

              Hi Andrei,

              thanks for your Tests

"(NOTE: rayserver option must be enabled on BOTH instance and instanced object nodes, I'll check if this could be optimized)"
              Thats good to know.

I did another Test and it looks like this:
If I render 1 Mio. Instances with the VRSCENE it takes ages to start. I had to quit the Programm after a few Minutes because there was no reaction.
I replaced the Instance Object with the an FBX from the same Object as used before as VRSCENE Instance.

This works fine, the only thing is that of course at the starting takes some time for the "Building GPU dynamic nodes".
After the rendering finished the Programm freezes for like 30-60 secs. I quess this is because of unloading some vram or the "not so optimized" you mentioned before?

The 1. Mio. fit into the 22 GB Vram in NVLINK, still have 11 GB of free RAM. so its maybe also possible with one Card.

              Cheers
