  • (Resolved) VrayColor / UserColor not possible to have values above 1 ?

    It seems VrayColor and UserColor are not allowed to go over value of 1 ? That is really bad for us at the moment.
    Test Scene is attached that shows a sphere with vray material. Color of 1 in diffuse color shows same effect than a color value of 100.

    kind regards

    Use light material, it'll give you values above 1.

      Yes but I want to use the normal material with all its features.
      I have to admit I was so used to the mantra behavior that I thought this is a bug. I testet it in max+vray also and it behaves the same. So it was always like that with vray right? I will find another workaround then.

      Out of curiosity, why is this limited to a value of 1 ? Maybe its unrealistic but its often usefull to be able to gain the diffuse color to values > 1.

        As a workaround you could set same color or texture as self-illumination and control it's strength with self-illumination multiplier.

          If the diffuse color is allowed to go above 1, this would mean that every GI bounce would add energy; this breaks the energy conservation of the material and causes all sorts of issues. We used to allow this in very early versions of V-Ray but people would often not realize that it was the cause for noise, fireflies, slow rendering and other issues; eventually we decided that clamping the diffuse color was the only sensible thing to do.

          The self-illumination color on the other hand is not clamped.

            Georgy mh but thats not really the same cause its not dependend on the scene illumination and therefore will give me always illuminated colors, right?!

            @vlado
            Yea, i kinda see the problems it may have. Thanks for the explanation. Especially if you render special passes for compositing its often pretty fast to just crank up the values to get desired results. So to have it as an option wouldnt be bad I think.
