  • "Evaluating python" for almost 5 minutes

Hi. I'm scattering stuff on a heightfield, everything is packed/instanced, but when I try to render I get a message that Houdini is "evaluating python" for almost 5 minutes. It's not a heavy scene, about 250.000 scattered objects, and I can see them fine in the viewport, no problem working. When I middle click on the scatter OUT, it says "X amount of packed geo", but I'm still a beginner so I might have misunderstood how VRay/packed geo works. Is there something I can do to optimize this?

    Houdini 18, VRay 4.3.

    Hey Monkeybrother ,

Any chance of sharing the hip file - you could send it to support@chaosgroup.com or to me email directly in case you prefer not to post it publically on the forums.

    Thank you!

Hi. Reviving an old thread I'd missed the answer to. Still have this problem and it seems to happen with just "unpacked" (to edit materials, then packed again) Vray scene meshes (having a lot of trouble with those). As I'm writing this it's been evaluating for 6 minutes and memory usage is 100% (64GB and 35 scattered trees that I tried to test). Cancelling takes a few minutes also. I'm really sorry I can't send you the files, I'm not allowed for both work reasons and because it contains commercial assets.

Edit: cancellation crashed with a segmentation fault.

Edit 2: Houdini 18.5 and VRay 5 this time.

I'll need a scene to check this. Could send it to us?
