  • (Fixed) GPU utilization

    Hey Team,

installed a second 3090 in my workstation and it looks like we're using a single GPU only for progressive/bucket on Windows. No Matter what I do, second GPU stays untouched. Standalone V-Ray benchmark app uses both GPU at 100%, so it looks ike it's a Houdini issue.

Everything works fine on Ubuntu, both GPUs are utilized, render times for the same scene are less than half. See NVIDIA-SMI screenshot below for Windows.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Chris.

    Hey miro.digital ,

We'll check ASAP but meanwhile - could you please verify that you've chosen both devices for rendering under the Renderer -> Export -> Devices button ?

    Best regards!

Thanks Gosho.Genchev, kinda strange for sure. Confirmed, no matter what GPU is selected, only GPU0 is utilized in Houdini.

Forgot to add, it's the latest nightly and H18.5.462.

      Thanks,

      Chris.

PS: Arnold has some issues with the new 3XXX cards as well when more than 1 GPU is installed

Hey Gosho.Genchev, just checking in if we have any new update on the issue. Would be awesome if both GPUs could be used with Windows.

        Thanks!

I've checked on a machine with 4 GV100 cards - all cards are utilized.
Does this happen for you on all scenes or just particular one?
Have you used "GPU Devices" GUI to select cards? Selected cards are stored in scene variable VFH_GPU_CUDA_DEVICES you could check it with Textport "set" command.
What is the V-Ray log output?
Do you see GPU related messages like:
            "[2021/Feb/27|12:00:54] VFH | Info| V-Ray: Number of CUDA devices: 4"
            ?

Same happening for me > I unchecked one check box for IPR and it seemed to fix things but then my lights stop working.

                Hey bdancer,

all scenes running Windows affected, works fine with Linux.

Selected both GPUs via the GUI and checked Textport, all look good here, both GPUs shown - "VFH_GPU_CUDA_DEVICES = GeForce RTX 3090 [1];GeForce RTX 3090 [2]". V-Ray log window however shows "V-Ray: Number of CUDA devices: 1".

I was curious and switched to CUDA mode, guess what all GPUs are utilized and V-Ray log shows both GPUs as well. So I guess there might be some issue with the RTX mode.

                Thanks,

                Chris.

If you unset VFH_GPU_CUDA_DEVICES will it be the same?

Just updated the previous post, when using CUDA mode instead of RTX, all works fine. Both GPUs run at 100% and V-Ray log shows both GPUs as well.

Will check unset, just a sec.

Same with unset GPU devices, only 1 GPU running and recognized in V-Ray log. So it looks like it might be something connected to CUDA/RTX as CUDA works fine.

I think I've found the issue, should work better in the next nightly.
