  • (Resolved) Material Libray in Houdini

I don't seem to find how to use the material library in Houdini and although the info talks briefly about it, I don't seem to see the documentation on the subject.

Are these organised as Galleries? Special python panel?

How do I use these MAT files?

Can someone point me in the right directly please? Thanks in advance.

    Hello, jordi_bares1.

V-Ray Material Library is shown and organized as a gallery, yes.
You could easily find it, just follow these steps:

    1. Please make sure, that you have V-Ray checked here (Edit > Preferences > Rendering).

    2. Then go to the Material Palette, choose again vray and enjoy the Library.

    3. Drag & drop in the right panel and then bring it over the desired object.

Please look at the linked .gif files and give us feedback is everything clear enough.

    Best regards,
    TS

Hi jordi_bares1 , new V-Ray material library is available only on windows for now. You can find materials in Material Palette tab. Be sure V-Ray is enabled in Edit > Preferences > Rendering menu.

In some of materials created by the gallery presets I have found it referring to textures using the variable $VFH_ASSET_PATH.
Where that should be pointing? I haven't found in our vray installation an asset folder, or a folder with textures, probably we are missing something?
          Thanks

$VFH_ASSET_PATH should point the folder where Material Library is downloaded to. It is defined in V-Ray json file in Houdini packages folder.

Is this still windows only? Any way to download without using the installer? We deploy our vray versions to network share using the archive packages.

Yes, still only on windows and there is no other way to download the library.

miko3d It works fine on Linux. Just gotta run the installer on Windows and then steal the files and put them somewhere else.
Then set VFH_ASSET_PATH and HOUDINI_GALLERY_PATH accordingly.
