  • provided example scene does not render correctly

Help! Brand new to V-Ray, am trialling it with my company, managed to find the nightlies for my version 18.5.462 but rendering seems way off. eg not seeing what I am expecting or how the materials are meant to work. So I loaded the example scene sci-fi_Sphere and this is the result? I get a lot of errors when loading the screen. (see pic) I hope am missing something obvious... not been much fun so far or much info on step by steps for houdini. seems to be installed ok just does not render. I've tried setting preferences to Rendering > vray and can see the material library butmust be missing some other vital step?

    Hi Rob,

Welcome to the forum, fellow user here
Looks like there's some issue with your VFH installation/deployment, you have a lot of errors and warnings about material VOP nodes in the open dialog warning box.
How are you loading V-Ray, via installation or package? Looks like you are not using a Houdini python 3 build, is the V-Ray installation maybe pointing to the python3 folder? Have you tried following the zip installation guide in the docs? https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...ation+from+zip

I tried that same Houdini build version with today VFH 5 build and there was no issues with the materials getting loaded or rendering.

    Best,
    David.

You have to be quite careful that you are matching the Vray build to the Houdini Build.
As you can see, getting it wrong can mean sometimes things sorta work but don't really.

        Best,
        David.
        Many thanks for your response,
this is most odd, not sure what you mean by Houdini python 3 build... ? the json file points to python 2_7? and that is the version with houdini? also I followed the instructions carefully on the link provided (thanks) there doesnt seem to be a mention of Python 3 build needed? so I had installed via the installer, just tried now via the zip file pointing to a new folder, exactly the same result. and yes it appears its maybe python related as whatever constructs the materials / Shop / VOP / networks is broken on loading this demo scene. here is exact output log on loading

I am on Houdini v18.5.462 and I downloaded version vray_adv_50050_houdini18.5.462_9ea6717_13035 from https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...table/20210412. this was made on 12th April... I couldnt seem to see / find a later version than this? what version of the vray build are you using that works for you?

Additionally, your post got me intrigue on python 3 version... so I downloaded a version of houdini that comes with python 3 and also tried a version that seems better supported by Chaos (eg not on nightlies build) 18.5.408 so when I try load this with the zip installer for this version houdini says:

"Houdini DSO error(126) Couldnt load disk/location/v408_zip/vfh_home/dso/vray_for_houdini.dll

this is probably because this file was intended to use with a different version of houdini. "

so am guessing its NOT python 3 version I needed and I *was* already on correct version for 18.5.462.. as it still has the same error VOP materials / shop errors also when loading the example scene provided... somethings broken.. I tried this on a different machine with a fresh install of both also just in case

That should be the correct python version yes. So that's not the issue.

Give it a try with the most recent builds. I tried with a build from the 2nd of June. https://nightlies.chaosgroup.com/mai...ghtly/20210602

This error is due to a mismatch from the Houdini and VFH versions. (Houdini=18.5.462, VFH=18.5.408 ).

This is very odd indeed. I never seen those issues on loading a scene or the materials not working. Better if one of the QA guys give you a hand too chakarov.

By the way, where is that test scene located? I could't find it in the documentation.

            Best,

david.anastacio sorry if it was unclear, I definitely matched the houdini version with the VFH version, I just said that the latest non nightlies version available was 18.5.408 and that was the version I tested and downloaded the python 3 version of houdini for and got the .dll error I reported .. previously had matched python 2.7 18.5.462 with the VFH version 18.5.462 released on 12th April also and still had problems with the demo scene working correctly. on two different machines..

the demo scene called SciFi_Sphere can be found here https://www.chaosgroup.com/resources...s/vray-houdini

I think the v-ray is working now.. is unclear as Im complete newbie to V-Ray so is hard to tell, some issues with refreshing on parameter changing with volume grid shaders and environment fogs etc but the demo scene never ever loads correctly for me

ALSO how do you get the June 2nd version of HFV? in my 2nd june folder its just PheonixFD and V-ray for Maya and Max I dont see the houdini version in any of the latest builds folders? the latest stable houdini version I can find is 12th April

Ok, but usualy those DSO errors seem to indicate version mismatch. They come up ever so often here in the forum and usually is just the user getting the wrong version of VFH.

the demo scene called SciFi_Sphere can be found here https://www.chaosgroup.com/resources...s/vray-houdini
Thanks. Yep, that sphere scene is definitively broken.

Ah right, finally some confirmation am on same page as everyone else.. thank you! I think its pretty imperative Chaos Group to fix the demo scene no? Very frustrating experience for new users like myself. and unfortunately I dont have access to those folders, my company, Happy Mushroom, is trailing V-Ray for Unreal mainly Im just the lone FX artist for VAD on Houdini... will have a go , as what you see on your test render is remarkably different from mine on April 12th Version and perhaps experiencing other long fixed bugs also

Yep, this should be fixed Gosho.Genchev.

Since you mentioned that you are doing FX and that you were also trying out volumes, make sure to check this post on rendering volumes with V-Ray: https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...me#post1108582

david.anastacio thanks for the link! I did 2 tickets to support for both issues, lack of access to latest builds for VfH and also example scene is borked. so at least they are aware of this now. And yeah think its old versions issue with volumes as a bit of digging says that the problem Im currently having with the volume / aerial perspective volume not working together has actually been fixed. in my version, CPU, GPU or RTX are all broken.
