try change scatter points count, or add remove decal mask image, IPR will freeze, and I have to use task manager to kill houdini process.

Hi len_xie
After discussing the matter internally we concluded that due to the complex calculations a longer wait time is expected.
Note that the set-up you are using will do just fine if you are Production Rendering. The freeze and the need of restarting the software might appear but only in Interactive.
If you would like to use Interactive for some tests previous to the Production Rendering I would encourage you to remove the expression: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...8_12-38-03.jpg
It seems that when this expression is gone the calculations are significantly faster.
In addition to the above, what I would recommend is creating a Houdini Procedural Texture and using it in your set-up. I am sure you are aware that one of Houdini's strongest sides is the procedural workflow. I believe it will fit right into your work.
I see that SideFX has a tutorial on the topic. Feel free to check it out: https://www.sidefx.com/tutorials/pro...ng-and-baking/
Of course, you can use your own references and knowledge as well

Hello len_xie
Please note that V-Ray Decal itself does not cause a Freeze. It could appear when there are more complex calculations to be made, however, if waited the software will recover and there will be no need of restarting it.
On the video you can see exactly this situation: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...8_09-06-08.gif
I tested the Scatter with simple Spheres instead of Decal and it worked faster. This is to be related to the fewer calculations it requires: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...8_08-42-51.gif
Another test I did was to recreate your set-up in a completely new scene. It worked without freezing the software due to the simpler geometry that was projected on: http://ftp.chaosgroup.com/support/sc...8_08-50-19.gif

Dear len_xie, hello.
To perform the tests again and more closer to your setup, please provide also the 2K textures used in Jand_Bark_vray mtl and share with us the exact V-Ray version installed now on your configuration.
Best will be to paste here the information from V-Ray > About V-Ray.
Thanks in advance.
Waiting for your answer.
Best regards,
TS

Hi again, len_xie.
Yes, we are experiencing some freezing/delay, without the need to kill the process though.
But it will be very helpful to share with us your design goal and why you have chosen exact this approach.
This geometry could be easily mapped via V-Ray Triplanar.
But maybe we are missing something about your workflow and we will appreciate to understand the whole picture.
There is no issue when using V-Ray Production rendering, is V-Ray Interactive helpful only for evaluating different distribution scenarios of Decals over the geo?

hi, tsvetomira.girginova ,I was trying to use decals to texture a procedual growing tree, the branches are fused together using vdb then converted to a continous mesh, triplanar is not an option because the tree is animated, and the texture has to follow the grow animation, (I did try to find a way to animated reference position to animate triplaner mapping, but did not success.)
