  • ( HOU-3971 ) Houdini MacOS Arm64 newer nightlies crash on render

Problem: nightly versions after 22474 (August 8th) crash Houdini MacOS Arm64 on render.
This is valid for versions for Houdini 19.5.716, Houdini 19.5.682, Houdini 19.5.640.

TLDR: Long winded description of my testing:
New Houdini Apprentice 19.5.716 is out, so I downloaded the latest nightlie. Installed. On render, once VFB appears Houdini crashes.
Ok, try slightly older Vray nightly. Same crash.
Ok, maybe it's Houdini fault - try Vray with another Houdini version (19.5.682, 19.5.729). Same crash.

Ok, let's try with my old Vray nightly that was working so far - vray_adv_61009_houdini19.5.682_244deb0_22474_insta ll_mac_arm64 (from 8 August). Houdini, all versions, including the newest, renders just fine!

So, ok, problems _seems_ to be with Vray and not with Houdini. Let's see when thing break down. Try vray_adv_61009_houdini19.5.682_0b00d89_22497_insta ll_mac_arm64. This means my working Vray will be overwritten.

Crash on render. I start to worry that some process on my Mac is breaking each new V-Ray install. Let's reinstall my old vray_adv_61009_houdini19.5.682_244deb0_22474_insta ll_mac_arm64.
Ok, renders just fine, so _maybe_ it's not something on my Mac.

Finally, repeated the process with Vray for Houdini 19.5.640. Same result - newer versions crash, the version from 8 August (vray_adv_61009_houdini19.5.640_92dd682_22457_inst all_mac_arm64) works fine.

So it seems, something was changed after release 22474 that breaks builds for MacOS Arm64.
Also, have to mention this, I have running Crowdstrike Falcon (sorry, company environment) so it might be that the builds are fine, but Falcon somehow messes up with the new builds.

    Hello vla_dunev

Thank you for your time and effort to gather and share this information with us!

We managed to reproduce this on our machines as well and have logged it in our system ( HOU-3971 )

We will contact you once more information is available.

Great to hear you could replicate it. Lookging forward to it.

I suppose Apple Silicon holds some surprises ?

For me, at least. I'm trying to pinpoint a case when IPR locks up or even outright closes Houdini.
