I was pulling my hair out for a bit and perhaps stumbled onto a bug with V-Ray for Houdini Core 6.10.09 [2e10c4ce] from 23 Aug 2023 running on 19.5.682.
I matched the setup for using wave instancing in the docs and demonstrated on Youtube. It works great unless the grid has any translate values. It seems the instancing is not using the planeorig attribute.
No matter what I set the attribute to it never changes and the result is that the points are based around 0,0,0 even though the source data might not be. I tried multiple variations on the setup and could never get it to work properly with a grid that didn't have 0,0,0 in the translate properties.
This is an image using the default Large Ocean from the shelf as a starting point. I offset the translate a bit. You can see the line where the displacement is off.
