  • Thin film in Maya: alternative to TexOSL

Trying to create a thin-film irridescent effect and it looks like the way to do that is TexOSL. The problem is loading that up is crashing Maya instantly on my Mac. Any alternative approaches in Vray for Maya other than faking it with ramps or VrayFalloff shader?

    thanks in advance

According to Vlado there's a native thin film shader somewhere in Create > V-Ray > Create From V-Ray Plugin, but I haven't been able to find it.
I use a VRayFresnel and noise driving a ramp, and I think I might just do that even if there was a thin film shader, just because it's so much easier to control the colors directly. You can find some details here that are helpful in re-creating the effect manually.

In the V-Ray Next nightly builds, V-Ray > Tools > Create from V-Ray plugin > Texture > ThinFilmTex. This is not in the stable/official Next builds unfortunately, only in the nightlies (see attachment).

Neat! I wasn't able to find it when we talked about it, but I was looking in the latest 3.6 nightly, I can see it's in the Next ones. Thanks Vlado!

I'll have to see how to access the nightlies. I haven't been on that train for quite a long time . Thanks Vlado

Actually... I can't see this shader in the nightly build from Jan 29 (which seems to be the only one I can access). Version 28876. Is there a chance it's not activated in the current build?

I think you're looking at the stable builds. ThiFilmTex is in the nightlies though. I can see if we can pack it with the stables, but in any case it will be in the next major update once we branch off for it.

Sorry I didn't update - yes, I didn't realize I only had access to the stable builds. I have the nightly now and it's working fine. Thanks for the help.
