  • Vray proxy alembic material assignments

Exporting alembic file from maya with lots of different shader assignments, how do I automatically retrieve these assignments in the vraymeshmaterial. I don't need the actual shaders just shaders assigned where they initially was.
If I look down the list it just seems to be all the hundreds of meshes in my scene,
    Loading through Vray proxy loader.
    Thanks

Preferably with the original shader names

What exactly do you need this information for? What do you need to do with it?

I have an asset and frequently receive assets with between 50 -100+ shader assignments over 100 -1000 meshes maybe more... a lot basically to many to reconnect quickly b y hand, it would be great it there was a way to read the original assets shaders and reconnect them to the vraymeshmtl. This way I would have 1 nice alembic file for rigging, lighting, shading and rendering. Reason for not using vray proxy format is that I can search the hierarchy of the alembic via the vray proxy loader and only display certain parts, then use the same abc to do this again for another part and rig the asset. Also alembic is great as i'm not tied to one dcc or renderer,

Initially, the proxy loader was extended to support reading alembic, and unlike the vrmesh format we don't control what gets written there to make it easier to match materials to objects.

With alembic, however, you can match the shaders by string using a vrscene file with the shaders and an xml file with the rules to match shader names to object names (it supports wildcards). Here's a bit more info on this: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...nmentoverrides

See if that's something that you can use.

Thanks for this, although still a little unsure on how to achieve this, could i export a vrscene of materials alone?
Would there be an easy way of auto generating the xml file?
              Thanks

You can enable "Separate files" for "Export to a .vrscene file" in the translator options and only export the materials. You'll actually need the textures and bitmaps too, so just disable Lights and Geometry.
The xml is not auto-generated at the moment, but the requirements are somewhat simple. The docs page has an example scene with the xml, so you can see what needs to go in it: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...nmentoverrides
