  • Is there any detriment in having Round Edges applied to everything?

    Hi,

Would there be any detriment in having Round Edges with a small radius applied to every shadingEngine in the scene? We deal with a lot of geo and most of it does not contain any hard edges but for the objects that do we like to use Round Edges to add detail. My question is, would it cause any issues to the objects that do not contain any hard edges having Round Edges applied with a small radius?

    Thank you

What sort of issues do you mean? It's there to be used so I don't see why it would cause any problems it's simply a type of bump/normals mapping. The only issue you are going to run into is that it doesn't work very well in a lot of situations.

Rounded edges are computationally intensive, even for flat objects. So it will make rendering slower, but beside that, there is nothing else to worry about. Depending on the scene, the slowdown might be substantial, or not.

Can confirm, I've more than halved render times by removing rounded edges and adding it in geo instead. Other than that, it shouldn't be a problem. Just a convenience/speed trade off.
