  • Vray Mud Material

Anyone have a good suggestion on how to build a material that resembles mud? Yes, mud my people. A client wants me to dirty up some models i have done for them. Trying to achieve something like this would be great.

It's more texturing and displacing than shader work. The shader would be pretty simple, just a mud colored diffuse with some reflection to make it look wet and a noisy bump map to make it feel gritty.

I've done mud on vehicles before, use a mask to blend between your base material and the mud material on top. And then use a displacement map to displace the thicker areas of the mud, like right behind the tires.

Depending on what you're trying to muddy up, you may or may not be able to get away with a procedural material for the mud mask. More than likely you'll have to hand paint the mask and the displacement map.

Thanks for the heads up. Going to give this a go and see what comes of it. Hopefully it works out well.
