  • Why Remap RGB to HSV?

Hello, I am watching a Gnomon Intro to Vray for Maya Tutorial. I noticed that the instructor frequently employs a REMAP RGB to HSV Node for color (Jpgs, pngs etc.). Is this a general good practice or do jpg textures need to be converted from RGB to HSV? Also, am I correct in assuming that its safe to say that when images get brought into maya, both Vray and Maya default to seeing JPGs as RGB? Thanks, I'm a noob and trying to wrap my mind around a lot.

It's just a way of manipulating the output of the texture. The same or similar can be achieved with a colorCorrectnode. The remap nodes in Maya are just more popular as they offer a great deal of control.
as for color spaces, jpg is by default converted to sRGB as jpg files are most commonly encoded in this color space. You can change that but only if you are certain of the color space of your files, usually sRGB does it for jpgs.

yolov, thank you very much for taking the time to answer my question. Your explanation about color correction is illuminating.

Also, regarding sRGB colorspace, makes perfect sense. Being new to Vray, having questions like this answered helps me get a better feel for the fundamentals of the program.

yolov, thank you very much. Funny enough, I've actually completed that Tutorial. But that said, I will do it again! I

Btw is there a way to convert an inherited Phong shader from a File (Its an X-Frog Plant) and convert into a Blinn? When I try to do things manually, the shading group breaks and everything is black. Surely, I'm doing something wrong here.

          Thanks!

You need to replace all the Xfrog shaders to Vray or download an xfrog tree or plant with the Vray already assigned,
look online on how to set up a leaf shader in Vray.
