  • Nardo Grey Car Paint Material?

    Hi Vray community,

I'm new to the board and haven't introduced myself yet. I did post two renders in the [url=https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/chaos-common/chaos-common-gallery/1060592-car-renders-in-mayagallery[/url], and will make an introduction post soon also.
But for now, I have a question for you: I have been struggling last night to recreate Audi’s “Nardo Grey” carpaint, and failed so far. Maybe anyone here might be better at making vray materials than I am?
Here is a link to some references of the paint: https://www.autojunk.nl/2019/07/audi-rs6-c7-nardo-grey

While I'm at it: anyone knows of any good Maya Vray material libraries out there?

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,

    -Ferry

What specifically is it you're struggling with? Unless I just don't understand what you're seeing (I'm not a car paint expert) there doesn't appear to be anything special about that finish -- it's a pretty standard reflective material, doesn't even have visible flakes in it so you could probably get that look with the standard Vray material....

I saw the post on CG talk last week but I didn’t understand what the problem was either. It’s such a basic material.

I think it's hard to explain, but so far as I can tell it has a very particular shine/falloff. When you see it driving it looks very different from other car paints.
Maybe when you see it in a clip instead of on a still, it's better to see what makes this look different than other car paints.

Maybe I'm over complicating things, or it was my render scene which didn't do it justice, but I didn't think I got it right.
Don't have the render or material anymore, so I can't show you my take on it. I'll try again asap.

Maybe post up your renders? It does seem like a fairly straight forward paint color, but maybe if we see your renders we can make some suggestions.

I agree there's something particular about the way that paint looks compared to the other grey. But to me it looks almost like a very flat dark grey diffuse with a single glossy spec, which makes it stand out compared to the metallic paint of the other cars. Or maybe a metallic lope that is just very, very rough/diffuse?
