  • WIP Topic - Pitlane

    Hi there,

About two weeks ago I did renders of two cars (see here) to get more acquainted with Vray materials in Maya.
When I was working on the third car I figured I needed a more interesting scene to render the car in, instead of just a simple dark studio setup. That way I can do much more testing on textures/shaders, lighting, special effects etc.
This is the car I'm working on right now; a widened Lamborghini Countach with a custom rear. This is an early render with a previous version of the rear lights which have already been altered a bit.

So instead of the dark studio, the setting I decided to go with is.....wait for it.....a pitlane!!! (how original and super creative hehe)
And after spending about 10 hours on modelling so far, here is the first preview for you to see:

I have big plans for this scene; I want it to be dark and wet outside with the (wet) car reversing into the pitbox.
So I need to make a good lighting setup, work with particles to create rainfall and raindrops on the surfaces and add waterdust on the track behind the first fence.
Also I want to go all out with textures/shaders/displacement/DOF/Blur etc (relevant tips or links to great tutorials that could be useful will be greatly appreciated).

For now it's just a completely grey material scene with a quickly textured car. But I do already encounter something strange.
If you look at the front fender it has some weird triangles going on. These are only visible with certain shaders applied. I think it gets more apparent when the shader's reflection is getting more diffused.
But why? The mesh looks good, I mapped it and don't really see anything which could cause this. The basemodel is provided and doesn't have such great topology overall, so I can just try and remodel some parts which need attention.

So, I hope to maintain my interest in this project. Like I said, there is still A LOT to be done. But it already looks great to me, and I do want to learn more about these elements so I should actually finish it eventually
The mesh is at 85% now, I guess. After the mesh is finished, I can start with the next step. What would you recommend? Start with the textures or start with the lighting first?

I'll probably come here more often in the near future to ask you for advice while I advance with this project.
    So stay tuned

    Thanks for watching/reading.

    Just some wild guesses:
Will it render those triangles when isolated?
Does it help to reset/conform the normals?

Overall looks very good, kudos! Waiting to see this finished, looks like a very fun project.

Try setting ray bias to 0.01 and see if that helps. This could be due to model far from origin.

On the second note, this could be related to shader anisotropy, if you use any try disable it to see if that helps.
