  • Progressive vs bucket

    Hello everyone,

Just wanted to see if someone could share their knowledge on this question. Which is better for rendering, progressive or bucket? ARE there advantages for either? Is one faster than the other? Just trying to see if one option is more viable than the other. I really do appreciate any feedback people have on this. Thank you in advance.

Bucket rendering completes the render to your exact specified level of noise and overall quality, based on the settings you choose. Progressive rendering cleans itself up with each iteration and, while it CAN arrive at a predefined quality level and stop like bucket, it is more often selected so that the user can stop the render when it has reached a level that is good enough for them. You can watch it and stop just when the noise has reached an acceptable level.

To my knowledge there is no inherent quality advantage choosing one versus the other, but if I remember correctly certain features aren’t supported in progressive rendering. I would consult the manual on that.

      beenyweenies,

Thanks for the reply. Thats a nice explanation. I thought one was better than the other. I did see some people using the progressive mode with the Nvidia denoise filter to get quicker results while doing lookdev. Some people also used hybrid rendering to use the CPU and GPU to aid in the render process. Pretty cool, but they were using the RTX GPU and I am running the EVGA GEFORCE GTX 1080 FTW2. Just trying to better improve my render times since I am running the 8700k. I did also notice that Cryptomatte does not work with progressive? Is that right?
