  • Displacement control preview in viewport

    Hi,

So with the new 'displacement node' which utilises maya sets etc, this means i no longer have to add a displacement map to the ShadingGroup of a material. It seems to work so I guess thats correct, but with maya you can preview the displacement in the viewport? When you add the displacement control, is it possible to link this up to the viewport preview?

Ive not added a map to shading group in years and displacement has always worked for me. Hasnt the displacement node been in Maya for ages? Or is this something else?

so you have just been adding the displacement via the vray menu? If I want to build up a library of shaders that have displacement, dont i need to use the SG method so its independant of geo? Also the preview only works with the SG method as far as I know, hence the second part of the question.

Yeh that would make sense if you needed shaders with the displacement connected in a library. Also, I gave up on Maya viewport being useful years ago and never expect anything from it. I use a lot of blend shaders so I basically work in grey shaded mode and only see my results in render.

How do you control the displacement quality with only a shading group connection? Or are you also making a displacement node to control the edge length , subdivs , texture size etc? Ive found on cpu you can sometimes get decent results right away, but on GPU it always needs to have a displacement node and crank the settings up.
