  • Integration of VRayScatterVolume in VRayMtl

    Hi,

I saw that video last night and was wondering...

It looks great and very promising but have a couple of questions.
    - Is the rendering time going to be similar to alSurface SSS?
    - Does it mean that alSurface will eventually be replaced by this shader?
    - Will there be later any "anisotropy" for front/back scattering ?

    Cheers,

    Jacques.

    * The VRayMtl approach does actual multi-bounce volumetric scattering, so it tends to be slower than VRayALMtl. There are some ideas on how to optimize it more, but it needs some research.
    * Until we can match the speed, it will probably not replace VRayALMtl.
    * It may be possible to add control over the volume phase function however it doesn't exactly correspond to front/back scattering and the effect is somewhat difficult to predict.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Thank you Vlado!

I don't mind it to be slower as I guess It should give more natural result... For as long as it's not something like 5 times slower than VRayALMtl.
You know while waiting for this new solution or the VRayALMtl issue to be fixed, I tried similar scene in Arnold using "random walk" SSS and overall VRay is definitely faster!!
A bit more control can be helpful but I rather have simpler than unpredictable

In any case, am looking forward to trying it out!

      Best regards,

      Jacques
