  • vray standalone between maya/houdini/c4d

    hi!

apologies, i'm not sure where is the best place to ask this.
Super basic but kind of important question : will the vray 5.1 standalone from the main chaos download site work with vrscenes from vray 5.1 for Maya, c3d and houdini? or do we need to use the vray standalone that comes with each separate distribution?

I'm hoping that it works like arnold or redshift where it doesn't matter what app you generate your vrscene from. but i also can see it might be different because chaos doesn't use a unified distribution like the way redshift does (all DCC plugins are built around the same core render version).

I didn't see any clear direction about this from the docs site or knowledge base so asking here.

    really appreciate any info.

This is risky with Vray as far I know, each standalone includes the native textures for its DCC plugin.. They are not all the same(based on my experiences in the past, C4D Modo and Houdini)
And it is very hard to verify, will need to confirm from each dev..

Muhammed, what you are saying matches my past experience trying to work with standalone from a year or two ago.
appreciate your sharing your knowledge on this. thanks.

i'm happy to hear if anyone else can confirm this but i'll plan on keeping them separate.
oh well. maybe one day it can work as one standalone!

        Hi Doug,
You need to compare the V-Ray version for standalone. For example, for V-Ray 5.1.2 we use the same dev branch for Maya, Houdini and Cinema4D integrations. This hasn't always been the case in the past.

We do expect similar, but not necessarily the same Standalone in each of these three products.
The reason for this is that releases happen with different cadence for each and every platform. So some fixes might be available in 5.1.20 for Maya, but may become available in 5.1.21 for Houdini.

Additionally, VRay4C4D contains C4D-specific nodes that we can't include in VRay4Maya for IP reasons.

        Hope that cleared things up.
