Is there a way to override the material coming with a USD file?

Hi there,
For the moment this is not possible, as it is not clearly defined what needs to happen. F.e. USD by spec has a material encoded in the file and there's nothing about overrides.
There was a discussion on the Autodesk USD github page and it was confirmed that having material overrides onto USD files is not an expected workflow: https://github.com/Autodesk/maya-usd/discussions/1421
Having said that, can you describe why you need to do this, what are your use-cases and how do you expect this to work?

If USD files coming from a non Vray source there is often only the pixar preview surface shader on them.
Id like to override the material. USD files does have looks folder traveling with them. We would like to add a look for vray.

Ok i see the material workflows are missing in Maya. I thought it does work like in Omniverse.
