  • Edge detection toon renders

Has anyone tried to create the same effect as in this tutorial with Arnold?

    Should be possible right?
How do you set up a shader to find the edges of a texture file and draw them as toon line?

Is it possible to get a toon line to draw along a shadow line as in this example?

What do you mean by this?

We cannot do this, but it sounds like a good idea. I've logged an improvement request (internal bug-tracker id: VMAYA-12097).

I have just purchased this online tutorial to see if I can copy or transfer the technique over but dont think it's possible.

In the tutorial you can plug a texture into a utility node, then Arnold can trace any edges of the image into a toon line.

It's such a cool effect. If we could get this it would be a great addition.

Based on the image alpha, I presume?

I dont think it is based on image alpha as the images used are from "JSplacement" which is a displacement map generator and they dont have alpha.
So dont know how Arnold detects edges maybe based on contrast?

It looks like definitely the edge detection working in some way or another...Maybe this will work https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/arnol.../td-p/11058034

Hmm, it's possible. I'll notify the project manager about the thread and we'll see if it's possible to implement something similar.

Absolutely brilliant thanks herit, it's just a really nice effect and would open VRay to new line styles.
Many thanks for putting this forward.
