  • Color workflow

Can someone tell me if I have a proper understanding on color workflow or how it can be improved upon? This all started when I noticed banding in my renders in dark places.

At first i found posts saying the tonemap was capping values. then it looked like the denoiser was causing it which it was. well not causing it but making it more noticeable. or files needed to be exr. but it turns out the VFB dithers colors so its looks great in VFB but not in Chaos player. Seems dither colors should be off by default not to give false images. So thats when easing off the denoiser to about 80% eliminated the banding.

so banding i think is resolved. yes?

so is it a good idea to tonemap or uses curves in the VFB with display correction set to OCIO, input color to ACEScg, display device so sRGB, View Transform to ACES 1.0 SDR-video and then check Save in image? when i do that i see my changes in my EXR files properly in Chaos player for rendering a sequence. but is this good workflow or should color or denoise be done elsewhere like in Davinci and render out RAW files or something of that nature?

Edit: i spoke to soon. The denoise opacity adjustment in VFB is only for show. When rendering out a sequence it applies it 100%, bringing back the banding. How can I lessen the Intel denoiser when rendering out a sequence?

I'm not exactly sure what do you mean by the denoiser causing banding. Mind if you attach an example scene and screencaps? Otherwise, yes, the Opacity of the VRayDenoiser layer is for previewing purposes; you could always recreate it in post, by layering the VRayDenoiser/effectsResult element on top of the regular RGB.
