Direct export is not yet supported, but we already have a request (internal tracker id: VMAYA-13190) logged for it. Even Maya hasn't supported this yet. What I found out working was the following: convert the xGen to Alembic (Generate Guides > Guides to Curves > Export .abc cache) and import it in a VRayProxy (which is supported for USD export).

In that case what are the release notes trying to tell me?

Didn't look at the nightly release notes. Let me investigate.

Okay. Found out it's an initial implementation, and not everything works yet. I tested it, and based on what I tested, it seems only the "Interactive Groom Spline" descriptions at this point are exported. Some known limitations at this stage are unsupported export of xGen archives and map channels are export. Since you have access to the nightlies, you could try it out.
