  • Vray Proxy Questions - delete History

    Hey Guys,

would it be ok if I set "Show whole mesh" to ON and "dont set normals" to OFF and then "delete history"
Does anything change in terms of geo and normals compared to the original object before it has been proxymated.

The next question would then be - what does the button "create a mesh from this proxy" exactly? I cannot use it, because i need my proxies converted back BUT THE NEED TO STAY in their hierarchy.

    Thx in advance!

The "create a mesh from this proxy" does almost the same thing you would achieve by deleting history with show whole mesh turned on. The only major difference is that it will reassign the proxy shaders to the proper faces of the mesh ( in builds after Dec 15 2009), which may be very helpful if you have a lot of shaders on the proxy. The "don't set normals" option is taken into account for "create a mesh from this proxy" as well.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem to parent the created mesh under the proxy's transform, so it stays in the same place in the hierarchy.

As for differences between the original and restored mesh. The only one I can think of is that the original mesh may have been split in several voxels for the vrmesh file. When restored these separate mesh pieces won't be welded together. In V-Ray for Max there is an option for the welding, but this is not currently implemented in Maya. In any case the original topology is lost so welding back the mesh may join together vertices and/or edges that were separate originally.
