In the distributed rendering option box ( where you enter the IP's) would it be possible to have a tab to name the machines. We dont really have a dedicated render farm & do lots of stills, but all the actual pc names are weird & it gets confusing remembering the ip's . a section where It could have a display name would be very handy for us here to know what machine is in use or not.

    Thanks

    Chris

I second this request, it would be very handy to be able to name a server. Currently I have a post-it hidden somewhere with the names of the corresponding ips in my DR farm.
    Not a great solution

Actually you can enter machine names even now. If you want to see their IPs, press the "Resolve servers" button.

I think you may misunderstand what we're refering to by "machine names". We're thinking of a custom field for a server "nickname" with no correlation to server-names / ips. Currently the Machine Name is the server's actual network domain name, which is linked to the machine's ip.
It's a strain to get network managers to change the machine names, some might be something obcsure like dhcp-230.domainname.com and we'd love the ability to have a text-field where we can set a nickname to that machine so it's easier to know which machine this actually is.

Hm, I see. But if you have to do that for every application where you want to use those machines, wouldn't it be easier to simply change their actual names?

Technically yes But I'm sure a lot of people are under pretty strict network admin reigns and can't change network names as they're provided dynamically by a DHCP server, so it can be hard to get that sort of thing changed for most people.
Anyway, it's not an important thing, we can quite easily live without this feature
