  • 2 questions: Layered shader bump maps and Layered textures

    HI all,

    2 questions.

Firstly I have been experimenting with the Vray blend material and have to say its great but one thing that is annoying me is applying a bump to a vray blend material, let me explain.

I have my classic paint shaders and a rusty metal underneath that I am mixing using the vray blend material.

Now what would be great is if I could mix the shaders with blend material but then apply a single bump map that would effect both shaders, but also still let them both have their own bump maps.

I know I could just apply the same bump map twice but this gets messy when you layer more than 2 shaders and its nice to have separate maps per material and then an overall bump.

Second question, what is the best method of layering textures? In mental ray you have the layer 8 shader and the mix colour node where you can layer up shaders and change the blending modes, this is great for building deep procedural textures but in vray I am finding myself using dozens of blend colors nodes and its quickly getting very messy.

Any help in either question would be much appreciated.

    Thanks for reading.

    Will

Try using the VrayBlendMaterial (Those happy smilies always look a bit sarcastic here to me.)

Sorry, I should of explained better and so have amended my original post. I am talking about using a bump map on a vray blend material.

Also in the second question I am referring to layering textures and not shaders.

Thanks for the quicky reply though, however I should of explained my question better, apologies.

You can use the VRayBumpMtl material to apply a bump map to an entire VRayBlendMtl material. The bump of each sub-material will then be layered on top of that one.

As far as texture layering goes, is there any reason not to use the Layered texture?

        Best regards,
        Vlado
