  • About Rt for Linux

If I not read wrong for the forum, linux and I think mac vray rt for maya versions would be ready for this week. How the thing goes?.

There is no hurry, only asking for curiosity. More troubles than waited?.

Exist some interface (right now in Windows versions) for Rt configuration?. Gonna be another tab in the Render Settings window, right?.

Well, here a waiting patiently linux beta tester.

The Linux version is coming along; we had some issue with the automatic opening of the V-Ray VFB window, but we found the problem. The Mac OS version is giving us more trouble (not with the RT engine itself, it runs fine, just some sort of weird UI issues), but I'm sure we'll sort them out as well.

The interface will be just another tab in the Render Settings, yes.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

Although in last builds maya doesn't crash & close instantly, still its no possible "interact" with Maya itself neither see any image.

After a week you got some clue about what blocking the system?

I hope you can fix it soon, a little bit of lucky and the idea arrives to the correct mind. I'm pretty sure you're gonna get it running soon.

        C'mon Chaos!. Cheers!.

Hm, works for me here, and there are other people who got it running. Did you start the V-Ray render server as described in the beta release notes?

          Best regards,

Your Honor, I'm guilty. I have forgotten to add the rtengine flag, but the thing is, although in Windows I could do it work, I can't get it working on linux.

            So, let's see:

One thing is the Vrlservice.exe (located in /usr/ChaosGroup/VRLService/linux_x64/bin). We need take this service running for let Vray finds the license (the wibu dongle).

And other thing is the "vray" file of "/usr/autodesk/maya2011-x64/vray/bin", that calls to vray.exe of the same directory (and this is the file that Maya uses to call vray, I think).

We need edit this last file "vray" adding the parameters of the rt beta release notes, right?. We need keep the "$*" and add the flags, or delete it?. Doesn't matters how, I keep unable to run rt.

            What I'm forgetting/doing wrong?.

Here is a short video capture from my machine: http://pich.chaosgroup.com/vlado/vra...s/rt_linux.mov

(Sorry for the buggy screen capture, it's from a virtual VMWare machine.)

              Best regards,

Ok, I was establishing the ip in the "setvrlservice.exe", not inside Maya.

Yes, works great. I hope be giving feedback soon.

Mister Koylazov, let me congratulate to you for the spectacular support you're providing me (and the rest of the forum). Awesome, I'd like to take a beers with you, and with all the team.

I'm gonna propose the definition "ChaosGroup Vray support" for the description of "awesome" in the dictionary.

And finally, I promise to hunt and kill everyone that speak ill of vray & chaosgroup.

                Thanks, thanks, and thanks again.

By the way, I suppose you know that you can "navigate" through terminal using the Tabulator (it will complete the directory/file, avoiding to have to write it), but surely you have done the video as you done for all be clear.

In Ubuntu all works perfectly (The video was Fedora, if I am not wrong)

                Cheers!

It seems that I am the only one that hasn't find/installed yet the linux version of V-Ray RT, could someone please explain me how they've set up their linux machines with the beta build and where you've downloaded the file from?

                  Thank you in advance

Hi varx3d, in first time, you should download the last nightly build form the chaosgroup server, (if you haven't access, send a private message to vlado), then, when you have vray uncompressed in a folder, open a terminal and navigate to the folder, finally execute the file using:

                    ./vray....blablabla.exe

follow the instalation instructions (or simply maintaing pushed Enter), and finally you'll have vray installed.

One time done this, simply open maya, go to the plugin editor and load vray.

Errr.. one thing, you'll need to install too the wibu software of the dongle, you can download all needed from this webpage:

                    http://wibu.com/download_user.php

in "wibukey" section. In my case, under ubuntu, there is just a simply .deb package, you can find it in Applications>Accessories.

Now when you restart the system, with the wibu dongle plugged, in your system monitor you should have a process called "vrlservice". This is the service which vray uses to "see" the dongle.

If you haven't this service running, open a terminal and write:

                    /usr/ChaosGroup/VRLService/linux_x64/bin/vrlservice.exe

And now you can render through vray.

For use Rt Beta, besides this service running, you should open another terminal and write:

                    /usr/autodesk/maya2011-x64/vray/bin/vray -server=127.0.0.1 -rtengine=1 -portnumber=20207

(yes, I know in the Vlado's video there wasn't "127.0.0.1", but for me works better in this way (I don't know why but in my computer some times rt goes and other not, yesterday, after see Vlado's video works for me the first time, the second not... etc, so finally I have a workflow a little bit retouched).

Now, in Maya go to the distributed rendering settings, and establish as server 127.0.0.1 (is not needed leave marked distributed rendering itself).

                    My "stable" method is:

Before open maya, launch the terminal activating the rtengine. Then, launch Maya, load the scene, set the server in dr to 127.0.0.1, leave marked the "use virtual frame buffer", not marked the "hide render view". Adjust all you need, and then launch a normal render (not rt), push escape for stop it, and then, from the Maya render view and without close virtual frame buffer, launch Ipr. It should be work fine then.

Thank you Reaversword for the detailed explanation, but I realized that nobody without a night builds access (thread in the forum I assume) can have V-Ray RT for Maya in linux, since in the main site download area there is not yet any linux version. I assume that you use the linux RT due to your access in the night builds. Sent already an e-mail to vlado for it, hope I'm lucky enough.

                      All the best
