  • Render settings quality presets?

Mental ray and Maya software both have quality presets. I don't see that option in the vray render settings. Considering that:
    a) vray has a lot more options for this than these other renders
    b) there is quite a bit of time spent in tutorials tweaking these options

It would be really great if vray had some quality presets too.
For example in addition to the standard "draft" and "production" settings, it would be great if there was for example a preset for the Universal V-Ray settings and for the settings described in the V-Ray for Maya Primer by Robert Nederhorst.

Even cooler would be if we could define our own custom quality presets in the same way you can define presets for a material.

      Does that work in Maya?
      I only see Max listed...

The rendering globals does have presets in the top bar. You can save presets there, and we have saved most of what you described. Esp nederhorst. The one issue is that it will save the "vrayCommon" tab as well. That is annoying. We have opened the preset in a text editor, and commented out the "common" parts, and shared the presets with our lighters. It works well enough for us. But yes, I can see great value in having some good presets right there in the options.

Neat. Thanks for pointing that out. I had overlooked that somehow (doh!)

Would you mind sharing some of these presets you have made? I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by all

sure. You can get the nederhorst one here:
            http://www.motr.net/vray/presets/

That's the only one that is working for now. As features change, new things are added to the globals, and presets get invalidated over time. But this one has been working for us. It may report an error as the commented settings aren't getting applied, but it works. Once you use this preset, you should only have to tweak the LC subdivs for the resolution of your image, and the AA threshold value for sampling quality. It also toggles on the Vray framebuffer, which is why it is labeled "VFB". Again, I can't be sure this will continue to work in newer builds of vray.

So I tried this out and it is not loading. I noticed that at least for Maya2011 the other presets have 2 files--one called VRaySettingsNodePreset_LinearWorkflow_VFB.mel and another called VRayEnvironmentPreviewPreset_LinearWorkflow_VFB.mel. I'm not sure if that's the reason, but it does not show up when I try and load the preset in the globals, so that may be why.

Ahh, sorry guys, this is for 2010. We don't use 2011 in production. Sorry, should have remembered to mention that.

It seems to be working now. Not sure what happened (probably I'm just crazy), but it loads fine now in 2011, thanks!
