The Mental ray MIA shader has toggles for "thin glass" and "thick glass" which allow for one to simulate these on geometry that is not physically correct. Is there anything comparable in vray?

You can do it by using opacity instead of refraction. It works a little different though - opacity takes precedence over reflections (whereas with refraction it is the reverse), so you might want to set the reflections to full white and use a VRayFresnel texture to drive the opacity. Make sure you turn on the "reflect on back side" option too.
