Is it possible to turn off render elements for a render layer?

Let's say I have a beauty pass with diffuse, raw light, and spec passes as render elements.
Additionally I also want to create a render layer where I generate mattes. I do not want to have that render layer render out all the elements. So I would like to create a layer override to turn them off. Is that possible?

I also see that the layer override does not seem to work for the file type. Will that be changed in a future release?

Yes. Select the element and look in the attribute editor. There you can create an override on the Enabled flag. Its in the "Extra Attributes", not in the "Extra VRay Attributes".
