  • upgrade pricing policy for VRay for Maya 2.0?

    Hi,

With the release of VRay for Maya 2.0 approaching, I am wondering if the upgrade pricing policy will be available to public at some point?
From the release notes of latest nightlies, it seems that VRay for Maya 2.0 is ready (judging from some the latest features and fixed bugs are categorized as for VRay for Maya 2.0)? Will users of version 1.5 SP1 be able to install and run these latest nightlies?

    Thanks.
    always curious...

I'll ask one of the sales guys for more info on this.

    Best regards,

      We have 1.5 SP1 licenses.
The latest nightlies (build 14259) works all right here, without any change to our license server.

      Cheers.

            Hi Vlado,

Will VRayLensEffects, VRayDistanceTex and other things like multisub textures make it accross to Maya V-Ray 2.0 as well?

Eventually, yes although not for the initial release. This is because they are coded using certain specifics from the 3ds Max API. For example, VRayLensEffects is a 3ds Max Render Effect. However Maya has no similar concept, so we have to figure out how to implement it. The multi-sub texture is based on the 3ds Max concept of face material IDs, but Maya has no such concept (and I have no idea what is the equivalent).

On the other hand, there are some things which are not in the 3ds Max version - e.g. PTex support; support for Mari/Mudbox-style tiled textures; displacement, hair and fur support in V-Ray RT (CPU version) etc.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

The equivalent feature in Maya would be the tripleSwitch node. You pipe any number of objects and their associated textures into a tripleSwitch, then pipe the tripleSwitch into the vrayMaterial map slot of your choice. The annoying bit is that it isn't random in any way. You must manually assign the textures to the listed objects... tho you could write a hookup script that would randomize it based on some parameters of weight/bias, and whatever. That would be useful, and not very difficult for vray to make use of in the multiSubTex. Since most of the functionality is there already in Maya... just missing some friendly bits... you might have an easy time modifying it for Maya.

It's not quite the same; the face material IDs allow you to change the texture/material inside the same object (you can have just 2 polygons to use a different texture). The triple switch only works for entire objects.
